The Old and New Testament books
The Italian word "Bible" comes from the greek Biblia , meaning "books" and therefore indicates a plurality of writings. From the Greek language the term passed unchanged to the Latin language by just changing accent: Biblia . Even the Latin term was originally a plural; but in the Middle Ages it was used in the singular, and so it was for the Italian and other languages. Bible points out, more than a collection of writings, the unity of the book, despite the great diversity of its authors.
The Christian Bible is divided into two parts, called Old Testament and New Testament. The word "will" is used with a particular value in reference to the holy books. In the Hebrew language the same word also means "covenant", a term which indicates in particular the covenant that unites God to his people.
The Jewish Bible is the book close covenant between God and Israel at Mount Sinai. It consists of books written by Jews in Hebrew, with some sections in Aramaic. They are very different texts to each other at the time of preparation, the place of composition and literary genre. The Hebrew Bible is like a small library consists of books that collect different traditions, whose first literary development can be traced, at times, up to the tenth century. B.C; the last writings are dated to the mid-second century. BC They are grouped and named:
the Law (in Hebrew Torah ) that together constitute the most important and includes: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy ;
The Prophets (in Hebrew Nebi'im ), with books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the twelve minor prophets;
The Other Writings (Hebrew Ketubim ), which are: Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther, Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah, Chronicles.
All of these books are also part of the Christian Bible and are named in it, the Old Testament . It should be noted, however, that the Catholic Bible includes the Old Testament, seven other books, composed before Christ, but not in the Hebrew Bible. They are: Judith, Tobit , the two books of Maccabees, Sirach, Wisdom, Baruch, the Letter of Jeremiah . The content of the books of Esther and Daniel is partially different in the Hebrew Bible and the Catholic Church.
The list of the sacred books is called canon . The Catholic scholars call "protocanonical" (that is universally recognized as sacred from the beginning) the books in the Hebrew Bible and "Deuterocanonical" (that is universally recognized as sacred later) those seven books, which are not read in the Hebrew Bible nor in the holy scriptures Protestant and Anglican.
In the Christian Bible, the Old Testament alongside the New Testament. It includes twenty-seven books, all centered on the person of Jesus. They are first the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John . Around them they have twenty-one letters, mostly attributed to the apostle Paul or those around him. In continuity with the Gospels, the book of Acts of the Apostles illuminates some great events of the first decades of the Church's history. The ' Revelation , the last book of the Christian Bible, celebrates the royalty of Jesus, Lamb immolated and living in glory with the Father (Rev. 1.5; 5.6; 22.3).
